West Cumbria, “Britain’s Energy Coast™, is located in North-West England, on the edge of the world-famous Lake District, one of the most beautiful parts of Europe.

It is an area of fells and mountains, lakes and rivers, but also an area which has been at the forefront of industry and technology since the 19th century.

West Cumbria Development Agency (WCDA) was established in 1988 to help regenerate the local economy which had been badly hit by re-structuring, particularly in the steel industry, and the end of deep coal mining in the area.

Its central aim is to help create jobs in the Boroughs of Allerdale and Copeland, which together form West Cumbria. This job creation is achieved by helping new businesses start and grow, by assisting local companies to expand and by facilitating inward investment into the area. It also owns managed workspaces in the area. WCDA is a locally focused and locally funded organisation, sponsored by the private and public sectors to carry out its mission. It has “sister” companies, West Cumbria Development Fund and Westlakes Properties, both with allied roles in local economic regeneration.

It is certificated to the ISO9001 standard and is a recognised Investor in People organisation.

Most services are provided free of charge, via funding provided by West Cumbria Development Fund.
